Goodreads Synopsis:
The Republic of Itreya is in chaos. Mia Corvere has assassinated Cardinal Duomo and rumors of Consul Scaeva’s death ripple through the street of Godsgrave like wildfire. But buried beneath those same streets, deep in the ancient city’s bones, lies a secret that will change the Republic forever. Mia and her brother Jonnen must journey through the depths of the ancient metropolis. Their quest will take them through the Godsgrave underdark, across the Sea of Swords, back to the library of the Quiet Mountain and the poisoned blades of Mia’s old mentors, and at last the fabled Crown of the Moon. There, Mia will at last discover the origins of the darkin, and learn the destiny that lies in store for her and her world. But with the three suns now in descent, and Truedark on the horizon, will she survive?
My Review:
*Thank you St. Martin's Publishing Group for sending me an ARC of Darkdawn by Jay Kristoff for an honest review.*
I cannot believe the Nevernight Chronicles has come to an end. This trilogy has been filled with shocking twists and turns that had me wanting more. Darkdawn is, unfortunately, where Mia's story ends and I am honestly so sad to say goodbye. Most of the book was fantastic. In Darkdawn we learn so much about the past and finally get answers to our burning questions. All characters have come so far from book one and it makes me tear up. I am still in awe of Mia, her character development and growth is so heartwarming. The action and fight scenes were very entertaining. Most of the time I was on the edge of my seat, eager to read and to continue the story. There were two main issues I had; the romance and the ending. I could not get with the romance. It felt so overdone and it honestly started getting on my nerves. At times it felt unnecessary and had me rolling my eyes, thinking “let's get this over with already”. The ending... I predicted the ending but had high hopes I would be wrong. I wanted my expectations to be obliterated! I kept flipping from the last page of the book to the acknowledgment page thinking “there has to be more”. I found the ending to be quick, a bit uneventful, inevitable and not satisfying. Overall, even though this book was not as good as the first two, I did enjoy Darkdawn. These books were unlike anything I've ever read, the narrator shared the story in such a unique way, always engaging the reader. I will forever be fascinated by this world. The mythology and the magic system is so intriguing I would love to learn more about them. I hope there will be more books within this universe.
