Goodreads Synopsis:
Elizabeth Lavenza hasn't had a proper meal in weeks. Her thin arms are covered with bruises from her "caregiver," and she is on the verge of being thrown into the streets . . . until she is brought to the home of Victor Frankenstein, an unsmiling, solitary boy who has everything--except a friend. Victor is her escape from misery. Elizabeth does everything she can to make herself indispensable--and it works. She is taken in by the Frankenstein family and rewarded with a warm bed, delicious food, and dresses of the finest silk. Soon she and Victor are inseparable. But her new life comes at a price. As the years pass, Elizabeth's survival depends on managing Victor's dangerous temper and entertaining his every whim, no matter how depraved. Behind her blue eyes and sweet smile lies the calculating heart of a girl determined to stay alive no matter the cost . . . as the world she knows is consumed by darkness.
My Review:
* Thank you Penguin Random House for sending me an ARC of The Dark Descent of Elizabeth Frankenstein for an honest review *
A satisfying creepy tale of horror and suspense. We all know the tale of Victor Frankenstein, the man who created "monster" but what about his wife Elizabeth? What's her story? Elizabeth Lavenza just wants security. She wants to be protected and safe. She finds that the only one that can give it to her is Victor, so she adapts and changes. She becomes what Victor needs. She is the most manipulative character I have ever read and the things she does and says astonish me. I was completely captivated by her character, always craving more. Kiersten White's characters are not supposed to be appealing, or likeable, but that's the point. They aren't good, they are selfish. Each character plays an essential to the story and they are strongly defined. The Dark Descent of Elizabeth Frankenstein is filled with madness and the lengths that people will go to in order to survive and succeed. Kiersten White is a dark queen. She knows how to write a dark story as I am never disappointed when reading her dark characters and tend to love them the more obscure and unsound they become. The Dark Descent of Elizabeth Frankenstein is an alluring monstrosity, I highly recommend.
