Goodreads Synopsis:

Beyond the Empire and within it, the threat of war looms ever larger. The Blood Shrike, Helene Aquilla, is assailed on all sides. Emperor Marcus, haunted by his past, grows increasingly unstable, while the Commandant capitalizes on his madness to bolster her own power. As Helene searches for a way to hold back the approaching darkness, her sister's life and the lives of all those in the Empire hang in the balance. Far to the east, Laia of Serra knows the fate of the world lies not in the machinations of the Martial court, but in stopping the Nightbringer. But while hunting for a way to bring him down, Laia faces unexpected threats from those she hoped would aid her, and is drawn into a battle she never thought she'd have to fight. And in the land between the living and the dead, Elias Veturius has given up his freedom to serve as Soul Catcher. But in doing so, he has vowed himself to an ancient power that will stop at nothing to ensure Elias's devotion–even at the cost of his humanity.

My Review

* Thank you Penguin Random House for sending me a finished copy of A Reaper At The Gates for an honest review *

I am shaken.

A Reaper At The Gates shook me to my core.

I am nothing now.

A Reaper At The Gates was one of the most anticipated reads of the year and it did not disappoint! I had been anxiously waiting to read this since finishing A Torch Against The Night in 2016 and when I heard that the third book in the series was coming out in two years, I was devastated! But let me tell you, it was completely worth the wait. Sabaa Tahir did an outstanding job. With each book, she brings so much depth and power to the world.

Sabaa Tahir is a storyteller. I was captivated from the first sentence and it kept me on the edge of my chair the whole time. Nothing I had predicited had happened. Sorrow and tradegy is all I can tell. Every character was challenged and stretched to the core. We once again get the POV's of Laia, Elias, and Helene and they were so distinct and perfectly painful to read.

The book takes place in a dark and dangerous world that is filled with deceit, politics, choas, bloodshed, and heart racing action. Sabaa Tahir took emotions from me that I did not even know I could give (and weren't hers to take). Her story is filled with the perfect balance of love and envy.

Have you ever been terrified of reading a book? If not, then you're in for a treat. Tahir draws you in so elequantly then stabs your trust with beautiful cuniving twists. Every chapter was fearful. My fragile face hurts from how many times I felt like I got hit! My heart is still recovering...

A Reaper At The Gates is a perfect, five-star ficition novel. There was nothing that had me snoozing, or wanting to skip ahead. Actually, at times I found myself reading a passage multiple times just to make sure what I read just happened! I am super excited for the final installment in the An Ember In The Ashes series!
