Goodreads Synopsis:
VICTORY COMES AT A PRICE. Mare Barrow learned this all too well when Cal’s betrayal nearly destroyed her. Now determined to protect her heart—and secure freedom for Reds and newbloods like her—Mare resolves to overthrow the kingdom of Norta once and for all… starting with the crown on Maven’s head. But no battle is won alone, and before the Reds may rise as one, Mare must side with the boy who broke her heart in order to defeat the boy who almost broke her. Cal’s powerful Silver allies, alongside Mare and the Scarlet Guard, prove a formidable force. But Maven is driven by an obsession so deep, he will stop at nothing to have Mare as his own again, even if it means demolishing everything—and everyone—in his path. War is coming, and all Mare has fought for hangs in the balance. Will victory be enough to topple the Silver kingdoms? Or will the little lightning girl be forever silenced? In the epic conclusion to Victoria Aveyard’s stunning series, Mare must embrace her fate and summon all her power… for all will be tested, but not all will survive.
My Review:
I absolutely LOVED War Storm. It was the perfect finish to this epic story. The title says it all. This book focuses on the war between reds and silvers as well as the different kingdoms. War Storm is an enormous book, and with long books comes the doubt of unnecessary scenes and possibly a rushed climax. Thankfully, that wasn't the case. Victoria Aveyard had paced the story perfectly and I was constantly drawn to the story and never felt a dull moment. Though the chapters were long, some were 30 pages long, it never felt like a burden. There was something constantly happening in the story.
I loved the political aspects of the story. Everything that happened had meaning. I cannot stress this enough! Every action taken or not taken was significant and meaningful. I am in awe of this. Usually, I would be in disagreement with some direction but not here. Victoria executed this so well. I loved how she makes sure you understand everything, all the reasons for going a certain way.
I was lucky enough to go see Victoria Aveyard on her War Storm tour and she said something that stuck with me. She said that the fight scenes were choreographed. The fight scenes were so striking and I think having a professional showing how to execute the scene made it all the more real. She also pointed out that she had done immense history research about previous battles and wars. The book consists of a series of battles, wins, horrible losses, including strategies, sacrifices, and death.
As with King's Cage, there were different POV in War Storm. I'm usually not a fan of multiple perspectives but not with War Storm. Each POV chosen was significant to the story. Victoria Aveyard needed someone to tell the other side of the story and with the different POVs, she did that. Each perspective helped to understand what was happening where Mare wasn't. I'm a stickler for spoilers so I won't say whos perspective we get in War Storm, you simply have to read it to find out! But I will say they were surprising in a good way.
Victoria's writing is captivating and truly magnificent! She expanded a lot with the characters and created a great depth within them. Out of all four books in the Red Queen series, I would have to say War Storm was my favorite, with Red Queen coming a close second. Honestly, there isn't one bad thing I can say about War Storm. It was a powerful, magical and seductive. I really do believe it was the perfect ending to the story and I couldn't have expected it to be any better.
