My Review:
* Thank you Penguin Random House for sending me a copy of the book for an honest review *
Oh where oh where to begin...
I had hoped and wished but it was all for nothing.
Maybe it’s because I started reading a lot more and exposed myself to different methods of writing, but I no longer enjoy Morgan Rhodes writing style. It’s very simple, basic and plain. There wasn’t anything magical that really drew me in. It is a very fast paced book. Scenes were over dramatic, and sometimes uneventful. I was making that “really?! This just happened” face. Also, there wasn’t any transition scenes. This was very frustrating especially because there were no breaks in the page to represent a transition. Not sure why Morgan chose this method, but it made the book feel so choppy.
It was too much and too little at the same time. There was a lot of repetition, and Morgan Rhodes kept explaining someone or something over and over. I was constantly scratching my head, because some scenes seemed so unnecessary.
Oh the characters! I don’t even know where to begin. They were all all too forgiving, too soft, too nice! Some scenes were so unnecessarily emotional that it made the story less meaningful. There was also so many contradictions! Someone would say something and another would disagree. Then someone would agree without any real reasoning, just for the sake of flipping sides. The characters had no depth or personal touches that it made the plot seem thin and constantly made me infuriated.
I got sick of Magnus and Cleo, I know IMPOSSIBLE right? But sadly, yes indeed. They kept bringing up “I love you” and basically “you’re the best”... like I get it, you love each other can we move one now?! Stop wasting words and start talking normally please and thank you!
I know it seems like I’m angry but honestly just disappointed. I felt nothing throughout the whole book. I was so detached with everyone and everything in Immortal Reign. It was nice though, to finally see this series come to an end. Everyone has been through so much and I am glad I can now say goodbye. Personally the series just doesn’t live up to the expectations I had before. The main reason I finished this book was to see how the series would end.
Overall, Immortal Reign was nothing special. A repetitive and predictable storyline that loses sight of it’s core purpose.
