Goodreads Synopsis:
Around the world, black hand prints are appearing on doorways, scorched there by winged strangers who have crept through a slit in the sky. In a dark and dusty shop, a devil’s supply of human teeth grows dangerously low. And in the tangled lanes of Prague, a young art student is about to be caught up in a brutal otherworldly war. Meet Karou. She fills her sketchbooks with monsters that may or may not be real, she’s prone to disappearing on mysterious "errands", she speaks many languages - not all of them human - and her bright blue hair actually grows out of her head that color. Who is she? That is the question that haunts her, and she’s about to find out. When beautiful, haunted Akiva fixes fiery eyes on her in an alley in Marrakesh, the result is blood and starlight, secrets unveiled, and a star-crossed love whose roots drink deep of a violent past. But will Karou live to regret learning the truth about herself?
My Review:
This review is going to be a bit different. I will be writing a little review for each book in the trilogy. There will be no SPOILERS, enjoy!
Daughter Of Smoke & Bone:
Rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐1/2
From the beginning I was hooked. Just reading the synopsis had drawn me in! The mystery behind who Karou and Akiva are and what is going on in the world kept me on my toes. I loved how the characters were acting their age, not trying to be older than what they are and having appropriate age problems. For example, Karou having to deal with her annoying ex-boyfriend and how she retaliates against him (which was pretty funny). The mystery plot was captivating and keeps you reading until the very end. The climax was epic and jaw dropping. I couldn't believe what happened with the turn of events.
Days of Blood & Starlight:
Rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
This is my favourite book in the series, I know it's shocking because usually the second book is the worst. It was fully action packed and we get to delve deeper about the politics and war. There was so much character development in this one. I loved remembering how characters thought and felt in the first book and how they think and feel now. I found it to be the perfect pace. The ending was so heartbreaking that it felt like I stabbed. This book confirmed my addiction and attachment to the series and I never want to let go!
Dreams of Gods & Monsters:
Rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐
The trilogy ended beautifully, which left me completely satisfied. Everything comes to an end, and all the questions have now been answered. It tied it all up at the end. I didn't feel this book was long until the last 100 pages. I think those 100 pages should have been in a separate book with more pages. The ending felt rushed but I just wanted more! The end does leave doors open to many possible storylines and it's mostly up to your imagination. I am desperately hoping that Laini Taylor will feed us more and dive back into this world.
Overall:
I am glad I read this series. I really did enjoy it. The story was very unique and different. I I love Laini Taylor's writing, it was so beautiful and magical. She grabs you in and doesn't let you turn away. I was constantly reading whenever I had the chance. Same goes with her world building and character development which was prestine. I love the main characters, and the side characters, especially Hazel, Liraz, Akiva, Karou, Ziri, Mik and Zuzana. They were my family in this book and I couldn't have asked for a better one. I cried, I laughed. I was happy and sad. If you're a fan of mythical creatures, magic and action I would definitely recommend reading this series.
