Goodreads Synopsis:
In the kingdom of Sempera, time is currency—extracted from blood, bound to iron, and consumed to add time to one’s own lifespan. The rich aristocracy, like the Gerlings, tax the poor to the hilt, extending their own lives by centuries. No one resents the Gerlings more than Jules Ember. A decade ago, she and her father were servants at Everless, the Gerlings’ palatial estate, until a fateful accident forced them to flee in the dead of night. When Jules discovers that her father is dying, she knows that she must return to Everless to earn more time for him before she loses him forever. But going back to Everless brings more danger—and temptation—than Jules could have ever imagined. Soon she’s caught in a tangle of violent secrets and finds her heart torn between two people she thought she’d never see again. Her decisions have the power to change her fate—and the fate of time itself.
My Review:
Disappointed once again...
Everless is set in a world where time is the currency, you could bind your blood to iron to make coin, (I instantly thought of the movie In Time staring Justin Timberlake). Everless basic plot is about a seventeen-year-old girl named Jules whose unemployed father is struggling to pay for rent and food. She sees that he's almost out of time and decided to get a job at the Gerlings' estate in Everless, disregarding her father’s pleas and warnings not to go. The mystery of who Jules really is and what she can really do is what kept me going. Trying to uncover why her father didn't want her going to Everless, and why they ran away when Jules was young.
I disliked Jules character. She set out to find out the secrets around her life but either gets side tracked or just doesn't dig or think hard enough to uncover it. Jules is arguably the worst undercover character that I've ever read. She doesn't know how to sneak around, come up with proper lies, or even cover her tracks. Her amateur skills and lack of integrity made her seem so uninteresting.
The weak romance addition just made the story thinner and less relatable. Most, if not all the romantic scenes are forgettable and usually happened at the strangest times. Sometimes there wasn’t any time for it (more important matters to think of and deal with). There were a lot of insta feelings that I didn't get, I would have loved to see the love, trust, and friendship to develop more.
I'm much in the minority on this book, I know a lot of people have read and loved it but it just wasn't for me.
