Goodreads Synopsis:

Against all odds, Ruby has defeated the villainous Frost King and melted his throne of ice. But the bloodthirsty Minax that was trapped inside is now haunting her kingdom and everyone she loves. The answers to its demise may lie to the south in Sudesia, the land of the Firebloods, and a country that holds the secrets to Ruby’s powers and past… Despite warnings from her beloved Arcus, Ruby accompanies a roguish Fireblood named Kai to Sudesia, where she must master her control of fire in a series of trials to gain the trust of the suspicious Fire Queen. Only then can she hope to access the knowledge that could defeat the rampaging Minax—which grows closer every moment. But as sparks fly in her moments alone with Kai, Ruby no longer knows whom to trust. The fates of two kingdoms are now in her hands.

My Review:

* I received this book from the author and that does not affect my review *

“You’ve melted my icy heart.”

Ruby (who is 5'6") hasn't quite been accepted in the Frost Kings court. Frostbloods have not accepted Ruby, which has made it more difficult for her. They are constantly spreading rumours behind her back and openly giving her evil looks and harsh words. With the Minax haunting her and causing havoc in Tempesia Ruby sets out on finding a way to destroy the Minax once and for all, freeing everyone and herself from its evil. And to do this she will need to travel to her mothers homeland, Sudesia. We learn so much about Ruby and we see her character grow even further. Arcus (who is 6'2") is now the Frost King and wants to fix all the problems his brother Ramses caused in Tempesia and the other nations. His first act is to establish a peace treaty with all those around him. Opening back trade between lands and to make Tempesia lively again. This is a big task that he has taken on and having a Fireblood in his court isn't winning him many favors. One of my favourite qualities of Arcus is his cold-hearted personality, but whenever Ruby is around he slowly starts to melt. Kia is a privateer Fireblood that takes Ruby to Sudesia and helps train her for her up coming trials. These trails will test her ability physically and mentally. One of his important features is that he's a shameless flirt. There's so many twists and turns. I predicted a couple of them but the huge twist wasn't something I expected at all! The people I thought I trusted turned out to be snakes and the ones I did not trust had no alternate agenda. One big difference that's shown is that Frostbloods are told to suppress and freeze out their emotions. But Firebloods are taught to harness what your feeling and use it in your power. Just showing how different each blood is (other than their physical features). I loved that Elly Blake expanded the worlds mythology and history. There's so much that I learned just from the stories that they share with each other. This was one of my most anticipated reads of the year and it did not disappoint! I can't believe I read it in one sitting! Can't wait for the final book, Nightblood!
