Goodreads Synopsis:

Modern-day sisters discover deadly ancient magic in book 1 of this Falling Kingdoms spin-off series! Worlds collide in this suspenseful, page-turning Falling Kingdoms spin-off series, which explores a whole new side of Mytica—and an even darker version of its magic. Crystal Hatcher, Modern-day Toronto: It’s a normal afternoon in her mother’s antique bookshop when Crys witnesses the unthinkable: her little sister Becca collapses into a coma after becoming mesmerized by a mysterious book written in an unrecognizable language. Maddox Corso, Ancient Mytica: Maddox Corso doesn’t think much of it when he spots an unfamiliar girl in his small village. Until, that is, he realizes that she is a spirit, and he is the only one who can see or hear her. Her name is Becca Hatcher, and she needs Maddox to help get her home. Farrell Grayson, Modern-day Toronto: Rich and aimless Farrell Grayson is thrilled when the mysterious leader of the ultra-secret Hawkspear Society invites him into the fold. But when he learns exactly what he has to do to prove himself, Farrell starts to question everything he thought he knew about family, loyalty, and himself…. Fate has brought these young people together, but ancient magic threatens to rip them apart.

Review:

I didn't know much about A Book Of Spirits And Thieves. I picked up this book because I loved The Falling Kingdoms series and knew that this series was its spin-off.

When I met Morgan Rhodes, at one of her panels, she told us that it takes place in modern-day Toronto and ancient Mytica. (If you’ve read Falling Kingdoms you’d know Mytica is the country the characters live in) I was kind of confused on how that could be possible, and curious to how Morgan would tie the two together.

The way that these two places are connect is as parallel universes. They are linked by history, magic, and *you guessed it* a book!

I live in Toronto so it was really nice to see how she brought city to life. It was really nice re-encountering familiar places, and I was extremely happy that she shared it with readers who aren’t native to Toronto.

There are three different character perspectives in the book:

  • Crystal

  • Farrell

  • Maddox

I’m normally not a huge when there is more than one point of view. After reading one character, I get so focused and concerned with their story, that when it switches to another character I become frustrated. It feels like I’m suddenly cut off from my train of thought, and some authors don’t do a good job with making all their characters interesting enough for me not to feel that way. I have to close the book for a while so that I give my full focus to the next character.

Not for this book. I was eager to read every character’s point of view. With all honesty there wasn't one character that I hated. I loved them all. Each of them brought something special to the table.

Crystal is from Toronto. She is an ambitious photographer. After seeing her sister fall into a coma from touching a mysterious book, Crystal sets out to seek answers. On her journey she discovers things she’d never think to find, family secrets and lies.

Farrell is also from Toronto. His family is rich and important and they belong to a magic cult that takes justice into their own hands. He’s a party boy, but life takes a drastic turn for him when he’s suddenly dragged deeper and deeper into the world of magic.

Maddox is from Mytica, who can interact with spirits. He soon finds himself in a tight position with helping the goddess or a girl's spirit return back home.

Just like the Falling Kingdom Series, A Book of Spirits and Thieves was fast-paced and easy to read. I was kept at the edge of my seat. Always wanting to know what happened next. Morgan always delivered. There was always something going on, I was never bored or felt that there was a slow part in the book.

A Book of Spirits and Thieves felt more like a prequel to the Falling Kingdoms series, so I strongly recommend reading Falling Kingdoms first then this. I always prefer to read books the way they were published. I feel sometimes there may be little spoilers.
